Essential Steps to Fix Your Garbage Disposal

We know how frustrating it can be when your garbage disposal stops working. Fortunately, many common problems can be fixed quickly and easily without the need to contact your landlord or a professional. Follow this step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix your garbage disposal. But before doing that be sure to watch these videos below for some quick tips that can be used to fix your disposal.

Turn Off the Power: Before doing anything, turn off the garbage disposal to prevent accidents. Unplug the unit or switch off the circuit breaker.

Avoid Using Your Hands: Never put your hand inside the disposal, even if the power is off.

Inspect the Disposal: Use a flashlight to look inside the disposal for any objects causing the jam, such as utensils or food debris.

Dislodge the Jam: Use a hex key (often included with the unit) or a broom handle to manually rotate the blades. Insert the hex key into the hole at the bottom of the disposal and turn it back and forth to loosen the jam.

Locate the Reset Button: Most disposals have a reset button, typically located on the bottom of the unit.

Press the Button: After ensuring the jam is cleared, press the reset button. This can often resolve issues if the unit has overheated or tripped.

Inspect the Plug: Ensure the disposal is securely plugged into the outlet.

Check the Circuit Breaker: If the disposal still isn’t working, check your home’s circuit breaker to see if the switch has been tripped. Reset it if necessary.

Remove Debris: Use tongs or pliers to carefully remove any visible debris inside the disposal.

Deodorize: Pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar into the disposal, let it sit for 5 minutes, then flush with hot water to eliminate odors.

Turn the Power Back On: Plug the unit back in or switch the circuit breaker back on.

Test the Disposal: Run cold water and turn on the disposal to see if it’s working properly.

If you’ve followed all these steps and your garbage disposal still isn’t working, it may require professional repair. Contact your landlord or maintenance team and let them know the steps you’ve already taken.

By following this guide, you can often resolve minor garbage disposal issues on your own, saving time and avoiding unnecessary maintenance calls!
