Water leaks can lead to increased water bills, structural damage, and mold growth if left untreated.
The good news is that many minor leaks are easy to fix. Follow this step-by-step guide to address common water leak issues in your home. We’ve also dropped a couple of videos to help walk you through a possible leak problem. You can also sometimes end up with a leaky valve around your toilet or faucet. We’ve linked a how-to for that below as well.
Step 1: Identify the Source of the Leak
Inspect the Area: Look for visible signs of water, such as puddles, drips, or damp spots.
Common Sources: Leaks often come from faucets, pipes, toilets, or appliances like washing machines and dishwashers.
Step 2: Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the Shut-Off Valve: Find the nearest water shut-off valve to the leak. For larger leaks, turn off the main water supply to the home.
Drain Remaining Water: Open nearby faucets to relieve water pressure and empty the pipes.
Step 3: Fix a Leaky Faucet
Replace the Washer or O-Ring: These small parts are common culprits for faucet leaks. Disassemble the faucet handle, replace the worn-out parts, and reassemble.
Tighten Loose Parts: Check for and tighten any loose connections.
Step 4: Fix a Leaking Pipe
Apply Pipe Tape: Wrap the leaking joint or crack with Teflon tape or pipe repair tape for a temporary fix.
Use Epoxy Putty: For small holes or cracks, apply epoxy putty to seal the leak. Let it cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Replace the Damaged Section: For more significant damage, you may need to replace the pipe section using a pipe cutter and connectors.
Step 5: Fix a Leaky Toilet
Check the Flapper: A worn-out flapper in the tank can cause leaks. Replace it if necessary.
Tighten the Bolts: Inspect the bolts connecting the tank to the bowl and tighten them if they’re loose.
Inspect the Wax Seal: If water is leaking at the base of the toilet, the wax seal may need replacing.
Step 6: Fix Appliance Leaks
Check the Hoses: Tighten loose hose connections on washing machines or dishwashers. Replace cracked or worn hoses.
Inspect the Seals: Look for damaged or worn door seals on appliances and replace them if needed.
Step 7: Clean Up the Area
Dry the Area Thoroughly: Use towels, a mop, or a wet/dry vacuum to remove excess water.
Prevent Mold Growth: Use fans or a dehumidifier to ensure the area dries completely.
When to Contact Your Landlord
If the leak persists after you’ve taken these steps or if it’s causing significant damage, notify your landlord immediately. Provide details about the leak and the actions you’ve taken.
By addressing water leaks promptly, you can prevent further damage and keep your home in good condition.
